I’m at a week long summer institute at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, learning about high performance computing and data science. The audience is primarily graduate students in various fields of computational sciences, from astrophysics to oceanography to quantum chemistry. I’m learning neat things such as the media in space (interstellar medium, circumgalactic medium, intergalactic medium) and the framework of climate modeling. Going to a thing like this is enjoyable in the same way going to a conference is enjoyable: you learn about all sorts of new concepts, skills, and tools, and you can see how people in other fields carry out their work. Three days down, 1.5 left to go!
